TVRs at Pembrey 2004

Pembrey 17-18 April 2004                      Saturday - Sunday

With a long trip to the end of Wales required, it seemed that a significant number of cars on the starting grid was unlikely for the first round of the season under new regulations. This did not prevent six Moore Racing-prepared cars making the trip over the Severn Bridge to the end of the M4. Unfortunately traffic and very wet, boggy grass at the edge of the circuit on the test day caught out Gary Coulson. Once a wheel was off the track, the car pirouetted before heading for the tyres at the edge of the circuit, leaving Gary as little more than a passenger. The speed of Pembrey at the back of the circuit ensured an early curtailment to the weekend for Gary. After a quick trip to the hospital for an exploratory x-ray to see if they could find a reason why people would drive to the end of Wales to drive cars round and round in circles he was promptly released.

Saturday The day dawned bright and clear with an early qualifying session and the TVR's were soon out on track. In the first outing for their turbo charged cars, Kevan Gore and Patrick Smith were forced to settle for 2nd and 3rd places, although you could see from the looks in their eyes that they both sniffed victory could be in the air. Steve Lewis just pipped new-comer David Reynolds for 4th place, with Graham Walden cruising to a comfortable 7th on the grid.

An early slot in the afternoon ensured a quick lunch before the Moore Racing boys were back on the pit wall. Kevan Gore quickly dispatched the pole sitter to take a comfortable lead. Steve Lewis used all his experience to ease into 2nd place. David Reynolds swears blind that he overtook at least 17 cars into the hairpin on the first lap to secure third place, though independent reports suggest this may have been closer to 2 cars. Pat Smith had a troubled start to the season with an attempt to use the rally cross circuit midway through the race. Graham Walden moved up to 5th place securing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places for Moore Racing. At this point the team tried to write "Hold positions and don't you dare throw it off!" onto a pitboard using only numbers, and this turned out to be the only failure of the day. Kevan Gore was the happiest man in the paddock with his first ever win! Closely followed by David Reynolds in 3rd on his first ever outing! Sunday
